Muscle Soreness Debunked: DOMS

Do you ever get that deep muscle pain, days after a workout or doing something you have not done in a while? DON’T WORRY! It is completely normal and actually has a name – Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness, or DOMS.

DOMS is created by the damage or micro trauma to the muscle during exercise. While going through a workout, mechanical damage to your muscle is occurring! That may sound bad at first, but that is exactly what we want to occur. While exercising you are breaking down the musculature, and during the next 36 to 72 hours your body will start repairing and rebuilding the structures to make them stronger and more durable.

DOMS will get better or less intense as your progress in your performance training. Understanding your bodies’ limitations and how to challenge yourself in a safe manor with exercise is important. Contact The Trust and see how you can get involved with EXOS to get started with your new performance training program! As always, if the pain persists or becomes worse, consult your performance coach as well as your MD to discuss your symptoms.

Please consult your doctor prior to starting any new physical regiment.
