Four Top Skills Recruiters Want – Leadership

Leadership matters. According to The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2015 survey, when employers were asked which attributes they look for on a candidate’s resume, 77% chose leadership and the ability to work in a team structure.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” – John. C Maxwell

As you consider your own leadership, review these three suggestions:

  1. Self-Evaluate. Assess when and where you have been a leader. Your experience as a professional athlete and as a college athlete provided you with meaningful leadership and teamwork experiences. Think about other experiences as well, like projects, volunteer experiences, and organizations where you might have demonstrated leadership.
  2. Build and Enhance. Find opportunities to practice and develop your leadership skills. Volunteering, part-time jobs, internships and externships provide excellent opportunities to practice your skills. Be sure to ask for feedback along the way so you can continue to get better and develop.
  3. Demonstrate. Given the value placed on leadership in the job search, it is critical to be able to demonstrate your leadership experiences through your job search documents and during the interview process. Be sure to describe your leadership responsibilities specifically and quantify results whenever possible. Speak to your AthLife Advisor about tools to assist you through the job search process.
